Reading Resistor Chart Values – The Learning Circuit

In this episode, we learn how to read resistor coders to learn the values of resistors. You’ll also learn how to differentiate through-hole resistors and surface mount resistors, as well as, determine the values of four band and five band resistors. Visit The Learning Circuit: http://bit.ly/2NpdkyV

There are through-hole resistors and surface mount resistors. Through-hole resistors have color bands on them. Resistors use a color coding system to indicate their value as well as their tolerance. Tolerance is the accuracy or margin of error of the resistor rating. This can Range anywhere from a fraction of a percent up to 20 percent. You can use the color coded resistor chart below to determine the digit multiplier or the tolerance that the color band represents.
Resistors with a single black band are zero ohm...

I have the same Velleman resistor assortment. Ran out of 10K and they are all stuffed in a big bag, takes 10 minutes to find what I'm looking for.
And for those of us with eyesight too terrible to read the color codes, grab the multimeter. Great system for young eyes.
Nice tutorial. One thing manufacturers really need though is a code for SM capacitors. It's impossible to tell what the value is without a circuit diagram or pulling it off the board and metering it. Really annoying if they end up loose in the parts storage too. No way to sort them by eye.
I bet she knows where her towel is.

Thanks, Karen!

Resistors suck for people who are colorblind, like myself.
The little song we learned in the Air Force to remember the color values started out with Bad Boys, I don't think the rest is acceptable in this day and age.
bye bye Rosie on you go bath via great western
I'm also Slightly colour blind so I always check my resistor values with a multimeter before use. Thanks for the video.
No vulgar and offensive mnemonics for the color code?
Where can i get a poster like the one behind you(The art of Resistor)? Great episodei hope more indept on transistor and voltage devider aswell 😀
I learned this in school to remember the color bands:
Black Boys Rape Our Young Girls Behind Victory Garden Walls.
I never trust my eyesight nor my calculation skills… I made a jig to measure every resistor to be sure… consumes time but saves me a lot of trouble
Brown,Black,Green and silver=1M0.
What about the EIA-96 marked SMD resistors? Is there some trick to remembering those seemingly arbitrary values?
This is one I saw at RSD Academy and has proven effective for me.
Better Black
Be Brown
Ready Red
Or Orange
Your Yellow
Great Green
Big Blue
Plan Purple
Goes Gray
Wrong White

I'm quite color blind, so I picked up a cheap pair of component reading tweezers. They work quite well on resistors
About 10 percent of men will never be able to do this, even with an infinite amount of training. We are colorblind.
Love Karen's videos ! Great to see her back !
In a pinch, the human body can substitute for a 500ohm resistor, maybe that might make for an interesting tattoo….
You mention tolerances being in a previous episode. But in your play list, this is episode 2 and resistors is in another 4 episodes. Also how do you know which end to read from? Most of my resistors (blue & brown) there is no discernible gap.
really helpful. Great stuff !!!
good class but too fast, for new to electronic.
I can't resist your channel your so sweet., thanks so much
