How to Wire a Simple Off-grid Solar Power System

How to Wire a Simple Off-grid Solar Power System

In this video we teach you how to hook up a basic 12V off-grid electrical system powered by solar. We use this system in our converted camper van and it has given us so much freedom traveling on the road being independent of "the grid." The general information in this video can be used for many other applications as well though not only if you live in a van or RV. We wanted to make going off-grid easy enough for anyone to do it themselves with no experience required!

Shortcuts to Each Part in the Video:
Connecting battery to charge controller - 01:19
Connecting solar panel to charge controller - 08:38
Connecting fuse panel to charge controller - 12:24
Connecting outlets/appliances to charge controller - 15:07
Installing an in-line fuse - 19:25

I didn't see the link to the wiring diagrams you used. Would you still have it? I like to print them off so when I'm at my bench I have a reference. You might consider connecting your positive wires before your grounds, less chance of sparks….just a thought. Great video though.

That was the very best tutorial I have ever see – and I've watched a lot of them!!! I know nothing about the subject and I was not confused at all. Thank you so much.

Newbie here. Thanks for sharing such an in-depth instructional video. One quick question because maybe I missed it: where did you put your panel?

I love that you take this very slows. Sometimes it's the stupid small things that people miss, like just screwing the wire into the controller. Having the closeup view of this is great.

It's a good thing that OSHA doesn't view these videos 😉 I've seen so many people breaking the electrical code that it's not even funny.

You made that look simple as compared to other videos I've seen. They just left me feeling like dumb.
Thank you for making it easy to understand with your step by step tutorial. Subbed 🙂

Why isn't the fuse block running from the Battery? If your panels aren't generating power…?

Thank you so much for KISS (keeping it simple stupid) for me! I've been hunting for a basic solar system setup. that I can understand. So many others take it way beyond what I want to do in my setup. Now I feel like I'll be able to tackle it without destroying the battery or disfiguring myself. Thank you!

In the picture you show an in-line fuse on the positive wire from the panel to the controller and from the controller to the battery. In the video you placed one fuse connecting the charge controller and the fuse panel positive wires to the battery? I’m confused

Thank you so much for this video! Somehow all the knowledge I gained fromy green energy class in college is already out the window, and that was only 2 years ago! LOL
